Link Time!

Isaac

1.   Watch the first of several online episodes of "Watch Isaac."     See as I show Isaac a cute JCPenney t-shirt as he guesses what eco fabrics it's made from.

2.  Bid on a Simmons Natural Care by Danny Seo mattress to benefit Bette Midler's charity, The New York Restoration Project.    Head on over to CharityBuzz to bid online!

3.  See an actual office detox online.  I raided the offices of Sprig.com and showed them how to detox, declutter and "green" their work space.   It's a fun piece!

4.  Pick up some eco & cheap bed pillows for just $12.95!  Filled with poly from old water bottles!  I just ordered a bunch for my new house.

5.  Read about a little crafting party I hosted in New York City at the Method pop-up shop in Soho.  One lucky hostess got a bottle of newspaper wrapped champagne from me.   It looks less curly somehow in her photo!

Technical Difficulties...

There seems to be some re-formatting on Typepad that is accidentally messing up posts from my blog!  Darn!

I'm working on it...   but for today's post:

Calendarphoto

Here's a sneak peek at my new 2009 eco calendar: The Simply Green Home.

It's full of some of my favorite full-color photography from my books and other products, but daily eco tips, reminders and lots of space to jot down your own notes and ideas.

We're using lots of eco elements for this calendar, including soy-based inks (yeah!).

Okay, now back to figuring out what Typepad has done to their formatting.  I am starting to fear for the worst!   Oh well...at least Memorial Day weekend is right around the corner.

Name Change: Daily Danny

Dojustonething

You may have noticed a name change for this blog from "Simply Green" to "Daily Danny."

I wrote below about the unexpected demand for my one-a-day calendar "Do Just One Thing" and our plans to digitize it and make it a free, daily e-mail that gives people their daily green tip each day in their in-box.  We're calling it Daily Danny.   I got an email once from a reader who wanted to say thank you for the blog and she said each day she read it was like her "Daily Danny."   So, hence the name!

So, until we can launch that, I thought I might as well re-name this blog to Daily Danny.   That's it!   I love writing my blog and I'm glad many of you do, too.

Updated: Thanks to "the Shopping Sherpa" for the heads up on the (former) brackets on my title. Had no idea it changed my blog roll order.   Brackets gone!

Happy Weekend!

Diningroom0090

Happy Weekend!  Hope you're enjoying it as much as I am.

I thought I'd answer some questions---well, more like comments--- that have been popping up on this blog, other blogs and in the inbox at dannyseo.com.

Question #1:  "You talk about the environment too much."

Answer:   DUH!  I kid... but seriously, that's like saying Mario Batali talks about Italian food too much....  It's my entire livelihood!

Question #2:  "Just because it is green doesn't mean we should consume it! If we have a bed that is not green - and we get rid of that bed now or later it doesn't really matter. You shouldn't consume another bed just because the new one is green..."

Answer:  I think this comment is in response to some online news that I've teamed up with Simmons bedding to create my own eco-friendly healthy sleep system.  It's true!  It's called the Simmons Natural Care by Danny Seo mattress.  But more on that later.

In response, I will say that I never propose people toss everything away and buy everything new just because something is green.  But if you're like me, there will come a time when you DO need to replace your mattress.  And when that time comes, isn't it better knowing there's an eco-friendly alternative that's readily and easily available?

Question from "dede" in response to my post on recycling old shot glasses into tealights.  And dede's comment was: "Love recycling the glass, but do not love the paraffin! Come on, Danny. You are an original soy candle man. What happened?"

Answer:  I am FOREVER a soy candle fan, so not to worry.  I just had some paraffin pillar candles I salvaged from a photo shoot I was working on and decided to recycle them into new candles.   Better to recycle/reuse then to throw them away, I figure.  But thank you Dede for being passionate about soy!  I am, too!!

Question:  In response to the MANY comments and emails I'm getting about about owning two homes:

Answer: Okay, this is a trickier one.   The reality is I have been on the hunt for a new home for a while because I have simply outgrown the current home that I live in that I also use for photo shoots and TV shoots.      AND, I totally understand that owning two homes isn't exactly the lightest carbon footprint.    So, let me explain.

The thing many people don't understand is that use my home as both a live and work space.   I craft new projects, tips and ideas right in my home.  I use it as backdrop for many photo shoots, TV programming, and come up with all my Country Home magazine columns here.  I test tips and ideas found in my books and products like the Do Just One Thing calendar.    And now I'm using my home as inspiration for a new line of environmentally-friendly products ranging from bedding to mattresses to cleaning products.

So, having a designated work "space" (translation: the old house) where my talented crew can go in and set-up lovely photo shoots and test products is no different than housing everyone in a traditional office building.   But what's creative and lovely about an office building? Nothing.   Here, they can be as creative as possible.  (PS-It's worth mentioning my electric bill for the old house is around $34 a month.  And that's including central air in the summer and electric heat in the winter!).

And with the new home under-going much needed restoration and renovation, I'm helping to preserve an architecturally interesting home that may been destined for demolition to build a McMansion in its place.    Plus, I'll be able to share all the step-by-step renovations AND restorations to help you do the same in your home, too.

I just want to clarify that I'm not completely oblivious to the idea of owning two homes.... but there is a much deeper and greener reason for doing so.   Hope that clarifies it all!

Question: Why don't you moderate the comments on your blog?

Answer: The only thing I do is delete obvious spam comments, for things like gambling websites and discounts on pharmaceutical drugs.  I am sure nobody here is going to object to the deletion of those.

But for the past two years, the thousands of comments have been pretty smart, insightful and interesting, whether they are pro's or con's to whatever I'm posting.   So, as long as it stays that way, I see no point in moderating the comments.

Question: I can't find your Do Just One Thing Calendar anywhere!  Help!

Answer:  The tricky thing about the calendar business is that come January 1st, your product is pretty much out-of-date.    So, we try to manufacture calendars based on educated guesses on what demand will be to minimize waste.   Unsold calendars, you see, become landfilled calendars in most cases.

So we were conservative with the print run for the calendar.   We totally underestimated.

My Do Just One Thing calendar has been one of the bestselling 2008 calendars of the year.  In some cases, it sold out in stores in October 2007, many months before the actual calendar selling season begins.    In fact, I only have two copies in my possession!     But on the positive side, it showed there was a real demand from people who would love a practical, informative and do-able daily tip to go green in 2008.    On the negative side, a lot of people couldn't get their hands on one.

So, to help the many people who have been emailing me, I am proud to say we are working on a digital version that will be available free of charge later this year.   It'll be a daily e-mail reminder complete with photos, links and helpful text to help you go green.    So far, we're calling it Daily Danny and I hope to have it up and running by Spring 2008.   Stay tuned!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Tree

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you!

I'm taking this weekend, Christmas Eve and Christmas off from blogging.

Here's a photo from my Christmas tree from last year: a live balled tree decorated with a tea party theme.   If you haven't decorated your tree yet, why not raid your pantry for tea bags, strainers, Chinese food fortune cookies and tea cups?

Enjoy the time off and relish in every second of this greener, kinder holiday season!   Posts will begin December 26th.

Rethink Recycled Paper Products

Marcal03

I've been having a lot of fun blogging over at the website ReThink What's Possible about a variety of eco-friendly living ideas and solutions.     Check out the website for some of my past posts.

This week, I'm going back in time and remembering my field trip to the Marcal paper plant in New Jersey.   About 1 and 1/2 years ago, I taped a segment there for my TV show "Simply Green with Danny Seo."   It was fascinating---in a school field trip sorta way---to see how office paper become pulped and pressed into recycled paper towels and toilet tissue.  You can read more about my field trip here.

There's also a fun post on rethinking the way you decorate your own home.   I always say to people CURATE, CURATE, CURATE... like a museum curator.    If you're interested in curating your own home, then check out www.rethinkwhatspossible.com.

Thank You!

Thank you for all your wonderful ideas on what I should do with that roll of hemp fabric and the leftover marble tiles.

I've decided to try the following:

1.  Make square magnets for the fridge. (Love this idea!).  I think it'll go really well in my new home... which is a bit more mid-century-glass-house modern.

2.  An idea I came up with: I am going to grout a large wooden block (a finial size) with the other tiles to make a large, modern, marble paperweight for the desk.  This could be disastrous and really wonderful.

3.  For the hemp, I'm going down the bag route: shoe bags, to be specific.   I know really truly expensive shoes come with their own little fabric bags to protect them.    I don't buy really expensive fancy shoes, so I don't have any of those bags.  So I think having some made with a drawstring will be nice when I travel.  I can put sneakers, dress shoes, loafers, etc into their own hemp bag.  And since hemp is mildew resistant, I don't have to freak out if the shoes are a little wet.

Thanks again for your ideas. I'll get cracking on these and will post photos up soon!

Some Questions Answered

Question

I’ve been on the road for a good two weeks now producing photo shoots for Country Home magazine, speaking at some home & garden shows and filming segments for CBS The Early Show.   Today, however, I am home in Bucks County, PA and decided it would be a good time to answer questions left on this blog.   So, here we go:

  1. From Ali:  “When you were on the CBS morning show yesterday, you mentioned solar panels specific for older homes or homes in picky developments that could be incorporated with the shingles.  Are those made by Sharp?”

Yes,  they are integrated panels that you screw directly into your roof, instead of having large panels jetting out.  You can learn more at http://solar.sharpusa.com/.

  1. From Jorie:  “Patty has a great idea. If Method is really looking ways to improve their already good environmental record refills are the way to go. Danny, please spearhead the campaign!”

Method does have refill sets for lots of products, but it’s really in the hands of the retailers if they sell it in stores.     I’m totally on board with you about refills, but the reality is lots of stores don’t carry them because they don’t think the customers want them.    To have your local store carry them, fill out a comment card or tell the manager!   You can also pick them up at www.methodhome.com.

  1. From DawnMarie:  “My husband and I do not wear shoes in the house.  The only thing I am not comfortable with is how to deal with that issue with guests.  I want my home to be warm and inviting and I do realize not everyone takes their shoes off.  Still trying to balance making guests comfortable and how I would like to conduct my home.”

In my book Simply Green Parties, we put together an eco-housewarming that involved guests leaving shoes at the door.  What I like to do is buy brand new socks---the really cozy, thick, comfy ones---and leave them in a basket by the door.  So if guests take off their shoes to reveal bare feet, they can cozy up with socks.    Let the guests keep the socks at the end of the party.

Passionate Folks here!

Hi everyone!

What a beautiful Saturday it is today, isn't it?  I'm on the East Coast and just finished spending the morning (early!) at the Extravaganza flea market in Kutztown, PA.    With over 500 vendors, I am exhausted.  I'll share some flea market finds that I picked up with you later this week on the blog.

Anyway, I want to take this moment to clarify some comments some of you have made on my Behind the Scenes at Country Home entry.

Some of you may have noticed some disposable products in the photos, namely a coffee cup and bottle of water.   Yes, they are disposable.  Yes, I avoid them like the plague.    And no, they weren't mine.

As you can imagine, when we do photo shoots, there are about 6 people on-set at any given time.  Stylists, photo assistants, photo editors, photographers and me.    So, before jumping to conclusions and leaving behind negative comments about some beverage containers, give folks the benefit of the doubt first!

My whole mission in life is to teach others to live a greener lifestyle by presenting ideas that are fun, gorgeous, simple and truly environmentally-friendly.   I don't point fingers and judge people; as you can imagine, it doesn't work in swaying or convincing people to live a gentler existence.    Instead, I try to present a lifestyle that is beautiful and truly easy to implement in our busy lives.    I share all these simple tips, projects and ideas in my books, TV show, DVDs and on this (free!) blog.

Now, I do read all the comments when I can and it is our policy to only delete comments that are commercial in nature (e.g. spam).   So, the wrongful comments will remain.   I hope we can learn from this and realize that if we are trying to change the way our friends and family live their lives, coming from a negative place will never do the trick.

So, that's it for my soapbox moment and I hope that clarifies the situation.    Thanks for visiting and thank you---more importantly---for caring so passionately about the environment.    We're all in this together...and really, together... I think we can truly, absolutely change the world.

Questions Answered

Question

Okay, it's been a while, so I'm answering some questions left behind on the blog.  I do read everything on this blog, so if you have comments or questions, always feel free to leave 'em behind.   Here we go!

1.  This question is about the recycled plastic rug post:

I've been loving your blog and reading it daily. Can you tell me how the rugs you featured today feel underfoot--soft or plastic-y? They seem to be just what I'm looking for.  -Heather

The rug reminds me of the asian tatami mats made from woven grass a bit.  The rug is woven plastic, so it's going to feel like plastic.  But it's a thin, very finely woven plastic rug, so it's not going to feel chunky or too slick.  The rugs come with velcro strips to help avoid shifting, too.  Overall, it's a good price and a good deal.  And keep in mind one benefit: it can be used outdoors in the summertime, too.   Just hose it down and let it air dry if it gets dirty.

2.  Hi Danny, In an impulsive moment years ago, I purchased an APS camera--it is the marriage of digital and traditional cameras. It uses a special film which is processed digitally. The problem is, I don't use it anymore and I want to get rid of it. Alas, no one wants it, even when I want to give it away for free!  Is there a place or an organization that will recycle cameras??  -Yohanna

You have a few options here:  One, you can post your camera on freecycle.org; just type in your zip code and you'll be able to send out a free post to people in your area.   If someone wants it, they claim it.  No money ever changes hands and it basically links someone with something they don't want (e.g. a camera) with someone who wants it.

Another option is to recycle it: www.greendisk.com is an electronics recycling service.  For a nominal fee, they actually recycle office waste like cameras, printers, CDs, DVDs, etc.    Perhaps you can have a recycling drive in your office and send them a big box of recyclables to save money!

Okay, that's it for now.  Hope this helps and thanks for stopping by!

Questions! Answered!

Confused

Okay, it's for answers to your burning questions.   You can always leave questions in the comment fields in different blog posts.   I read everything and I will try to answer the best that I can.  Okay, let's get going:

Hello Danny Seo,

I am wondering if you have any ideas about reducing waste from plastic cutlery? I am thinking of making portable cloth holders and wanted your feedback about the feasibility of something like that catching on.
Thank you for your time,

Holly

Well, Holly...first, that's an adorable and functional idea.  Love it.  I would recommend using an oilcloth fabric or something that will resist stains.    That way, used cutlery can be put in and any residual food can just be wiped off at the sink.  Easy!

If you do need disposable cutlery, there is so much out there that you could explore, too.   Recycline makes a line of recycled plastic forks, spoons and knives that are durable and strong...they are also made from recycled yogurt cups.  Learn more at www.recycline.com.    Here's what they look like:

Okay Holly!  Send me pics of your canvas carriers.  Sounds cool to me!

New Beginning, New Blog!

Okay, this has been a thought in my head for a very long time, but beginning Monday, this blog is going to take on a whole different look and feel...er, gradually.

I'm going to start posting new recycling projects, crafty ideas, recipes, and anything fun that won't make into the gorgeous pages of COUNTRY HOME magazine (where I'm an editor) or in my Simply Green books.    Sometimes it'll be a handy tip, something current or seasonal, or just an amazing find from a local flea market.    It's all up in the air!

So check back soon!    For anyone with a flair for DIY, hopefully this blog will inspire you, too.
