Red, Hot & Green

Hgtv_crew

I was just in lovely Palm Springs, CA (soaking up the warm sun as much as I could), to give a speech and film segments for HGTV's new eco-living show that I'm co-hosting called "Red, Hot & Green."   It debuts later this year.

Originally, we were planning to fly the crew out to Pennsylvania and film right at my house, but because I was already on the West Coast and they crew is based there as well, it just made sense to film in Palm Springs.  Smaller carbon footprint!

But onto a sneak peek at one of my favorite projects:  Recycling old plates and cups into a functional tray.

Crated_plates

First, I stopped by the Palm Springs Goodwill shop and bought this wine crate ($1) and a bunch of mismatched plates and cups.

Plates_cups

Here's what I settled on: some floral printed plates, a porcelain bathroom cup, two different glass goblets, and a bird figurine of some type.

Tiers

And here's the finished tiers.   I used a very strong craft adhesive glue to keep all the layers glued together.  It's such a strong glue, that you can pick it all up by the bird on top and it won't break or fall apart.  REALLY.  I swear!

Anyway, I had a great time filming segments for the show and webisodes for HGTV.COM.   I'll keep you posted on the premiere date.  Can't wait!

Fall Eco Check List

Fallleaves

I did a fun segment on the Saturday CBS Early Show over the weekend sharing tips on getting ready your house (and yard) ready for Fall.

Who knew letting fallen leaves gather in the sewer system, which flushes into lakes and rivers, would be bad for the environment?    The leaves decompose in our waterways, become fuel for algae, and giant algae blooms come alive in the Spring.     Just running your lawnmower over the leaves on your yard so they become beneficial mulch is the simple and easy solution.

Watch the video online and learn how to transform a sock into a draft dodger and disinfect your bird feeders in one simple step.

Going Solar @ Home

Image3146385g

Well, today was a horrific, rainy mess in New York City!   And what a day---overcast, dark and gloomy---to demonstrate and discuss outdoor solar lighting!

For the latest and greatest in outdoor solar lighting, check out this online video at CBSNEWS.COM.     It features everything from choosing the right lanterns to spotlights to gadgets and even Japanese style shoji lanterns that all use solar technology to power up and light up the yard.

Solar Week

Radiometer

I picked this up from a small shop near New Hope, PA recently.  It's a radiometer, a glass enclosed device that proved that solar energy could really work.   Basically, the black squares inside the vacuum-sealed device spin when the sun hits them.

So, speaking of solar energy, wanted to give you the heads up that this week on CBS The Early Show, I'll be sharing the latest and greatest in solar gadgets, powering devices and much more.

It all begins on TUESDAY, August 7th.   Learn about integrated solar modules for your roof.   Or a golf cart that's powered by the sun.   Even a jacket that has built in solar panels so it charges your Ipod as you walk to work.

Tune in and let me know what you think.    Let's hope it's a sunny week!

CBS Early Show

Earlyshow

Some news!  I've joined CBS THE EARLY SHOW as a regular contributor.   I'll be doing a new regular series called "Going Green" that will tackle all the latest and greatest in green gadgets, items for the home, tips on entertaining and much more.

The kick-off segment was choosing the perfect energy-efficient bulbs for your home.  Which bulbs mimic traditional incandescent bulbs?  Which were the cheapest compact fluorescent lights?   Are there energy-saving floodlights for outdoor use?  And what's going to be the future of energy-efficient lighting?

Please leave a comment on what future segments you'd like to see.   How to choose eco-friendly paint and what makes paints green?   Or what about green flooring options for your home?    Perhaps a nursery makeover for a mom-to-be featuring the best non-toxic nursery furnishings on the market?

Share some ideas so I can create segments that will answer whatever green living questions that might be lingering in your head.

CBS THE EARLY SHOW: Detox Time

300pxtheearlyshow

Tune in FRIDAY, JUNE 8th to CBS THE EARLY SHOW for an informative segment on how to detox your home.

This is a great time to flush out the toxins and clean around the house.  Just how dirty is your coffee maker and how do you clean it?    How do you get rid of dust mites in a jiffy?   How toxic is your home anyway?

HGTV SPECIAL: RED HOT & GREEN

Hgtv

Okay, guys!   This SUNDAY, JUNE 10th is the debut of my first HGTV special "RED HOT & GREEN."   It airs SUNDAY at 9pm (EST).    Did I mention it's Sunday?   The day after Saturday?  ha ha.  Okay, I'll stop.

Since HGTV.com has created a webpage (sorry, I'm a little lazy to link to it, but go to HGTV and click on Red Hot & Green), I thought I could share some photos from the green makeover I did.

Above is the living room.  We painted the walls with a low VOC paint from Benjamin Moore in a soothing yellow-y, pear color.   It was one-coat coverage, which...was...great.

I installed (correction: the window guys installed) bamboo blinds.  They are from a company called Horizons Natural Shades and are truly the best-looking, best-made natural blinds I've ever seen.

The homeowners and I made the reglazed plates above the fireplace.     Threw some organic cotton blankets from Gaiam on the back of their chairs, added a water hyacinth bolster pillow from West Elm, and curated a table full of their collected treasures from around the world.

Here's another angle:

Check it out---all together now---this SUNDAY at 9PM on HGTV.   Let me know whatcha think, too.

Isaac Mizrahi Goes Green

Isaac

A very very very long time ago I taped a segment on the Style Network's Isaac Mizrahi Show show Isaac how to live a greener life with style.

Well, I'm pleased to say it's finally going to air this FRIDAY, MAY 25th at 10AM (EST).    Check it out on the Style Network on cable.

The show also features an eco fashion makeover on an audience member and an eco shopping trip with my pal actress Kerry Washington at NYC's famed ABC Carpet & Home.    She takes Isaac through the eco bedding section to learn about organic fibers, healthy bedding and low-impact dyes.

I gave lots of tips on eco-entertaining from my book Simply Green Parties.    As usual, Isaac was his hilarious self the whole time.  You'll just have to see what I mean.

Simply Green DVD Clips

Dvd

We've posted some clips to my new DVD Simple Steps to a Greener Home online at google video, so I thought I'd put some links here of my favorite clips:

How to use chalkboard paint.

Choosing the right pillow for your eco-bedroom

A visit to a paper recycling plant

The DVD is packed with anything and just about everything I do to turn my own home into a eco dwelling.   There are loads of craft tips, too, at the end of the DVD that shows how you can turn trash into beautiful treasures.    And some bonuses, too.   THANKFULLY, there is not a blooper reel.   I think we had HOURS of footage that would qualify for a blooper reel!

Bye Megan!

Themeganmullallyshow

As many of you may know by now, The Megan Mullally Show was cancelled only after five months on the air.

Well, I'll definitely miss the show and I'll miss the opportunies I've had to be a guest on her show to share the many eco-friendly living tips with her audience.   Megan was a real rarity in the TV business: she personally picked the projects and ideas from my books to do on the show.   The last time I was on the show, she mentioned how fun it would be to do a segment how to create the perfect, organic bedroom.  She even had the pajamas picked out!   She was hilarious on and off the air and I think you'll find it refreshing to hear she is exactly how you think she is!

Megan is a true talent and I'm sure she'll move on to bigger and better things.   Thank you to Megan and her entire staff.  Loved working with you and I hope to see you all soon!

YouTube Fun: Sweater Chairs

Sweaterchair

More YouTube fun.   Here's the third public service announcement I taped for the Call2Recycle campaign from the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation.

In this PSA, we'll learn how to take an old sweater and recycle it into a seat cushion.  It's so simple.   If you've read my books or seen me on TV lately, you know I have been pushing this project.   It's not because I'm obsessed with sweater chairs, it's because I know we all have old sweaters we can't part with for some reason.  So why not make a cozy chair?

Okay, check it out:

In this ad, you'll learn how to recycle those free perfume ads found in magazines into beautiful scented paper flowers.

This is an idea I've done for a long time and put in my book SIMPLY GREEN PARTIES as a last minute centerpiece idea.   Who wouldn't love Prada scented flowers?

Megan Mullally Show: Thankful for Thanksgiving

Megan_1

Well, I'm baaaack!     I love flying out to LA and doing the Megan Mullally Show.  She is one of the nicest and funniest hosts I've dealt with.      And her crew at the show is top-notch; they make it so easy to be a "lifestyle" expert on the show because they "get" the ideas and Megan is all into green design, too.

I'll be back on the show TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 21st.  Check local listings at www.meganshow.com

Isaac

Isaac_1

I'm in NYC today filming a segment for the ISAAC MIZRAHI SHOW on the Style Network.   I'm here to talk about living green and gorgeous: having style while caring about the planet still.  I swear, it's not an oxymoron.

There's a rumor flying around that Isaac doesn't really care too much for eco-friendly fashion or living.  But he may have totally forgotten one key thing: He WAS ONE OF THE FIRST ECO DESIGNERS OUT THERE!

If you've seen his documentary UNZIPPED, you may recall he did a whole collection of clothes made from sequins that were made from flattened soda cans.  Coca-Cola, 7-Up, etc...     It was a cool and colorful collection that represented to me---back then---what green living could one day be.

So, Isaac, you are a Simply Green kinda guy...you just don't remember!

My new DVD!

Greenerhomelimecover

Lots of you have been saying, "where is LIME TV and how do I get it?"    It's on cable TV, but not in too many homes...I think just 8 million homes.

First, LIME is also online, so just visit www.lime.com in October and you can watch the first episodes of my new TV show "SIMPLY GREEN" right online...for free...anytime, anywhere!

But we've also put together a brand new DVD (hitting stores in early 2007) that give you the best of the best....easy, simple, fun and stylish tips on transforming your home into a stylish and eco-friendly haven.

Here's the current mockup of the DVD cover.  I felt it was safe to share it since we submitted this to a few magazines who asked for artwork as they are reviewing the DVD.  (PLEASE PLEASE be nice in the reviews!!).

In general, if you follow the tips on the DVD, it pretty much pays for itself.  As I been saying, eco living is more than just ecological: it can be economical.  Save money and save the planet!

As we continue to film my TV show "SIMPLY GREEN," I am so excited to be going to a variety of green and gorgeous locations in New York.

On Wednesday, we are filming at gardening guru Katharine Whitesidce's upstate NY garden.   Based on these scouting shots, I can not wait to check it out.    I've been promised that she'll show us how to make fruit based spirits and liquor using organic ingredients.   Yum... organic, pear moonshine?

In Sunny LA...

Ktla

I just landed in sunny LA today and ran around like a crazed shopper buying props for an appearance tomorrow on the KTLA morning show.  If you're an Angeleno, tune in to KTLA-11 at 9AM on Labor Day.   I'll be giving tips on throwing the perfect, eco-friendly Labor Day picnic.

Today was other an eco-sin day for me.  LA is the city of drivers.   I can't stand it, but what can you do?

Anyway, I called my friends at Smith & Hawken and they agreed to let me borrow items from the store as props for tomorrow's segment.   I needed everything from small furniture to bowls to trays to large umbrella canopies.    Lots of stuff means.... I needed to run a huge SUV.

So, it's been making me feel incredibly guilty all day to be driving this gas guzzler.    For as little driving I've done today with it, I'm shocked to see the fuel reader quickly slide back from F to E... why do people love these cars is beyond me.

Anyway, that's my therapy for the day.    I think Hertz should rent hybrid SUVs.  That would sure help ease my guilty conscience!
