My Mattress Launch!
Today's the day that my new mattress line, The Simmons Natural Care by Danny Seo, hits JCPenney stores nationwide. I've gotten about 100+ emails from people asking where, when, how they can buy the mattress, so I'm finally happy to say you can go to any JCPenney store in the country that has a mattress dept (search on jcp.com for stores with "furniture departments" nearest you) to test it out.
This mattress was set-up on the sales floor of the JCPenney store in King of Prussia, PA a few days early, so I stopped by the store to check it out. It was kinda exciting to see all of the hard work we all put into this mattress launch and to see it finally on the sales floor. I can only imagine what the sales people were thinking as I was snapping away with my digital camera!
Here are some cool mattress samples you can feel at the store. This is the natural latex foam that's inside the mattress. The cool thing about natural latex is that it comes from the rubber tree---a renewable resource---and it's anti-microbial in nature. In other words, it's dust mite, mold and mildew resistant for a healthier sleep. The little holes in the latex help for air circulation for a cooler, more comfortable sleep.
Some eco features:
- Fabric cover is a pattern inspired by the rubber tree, which we tap for the natural latex material. The fabric itself on top is Tencel, a biodegradable fabric made from tree cellulose.
- The wood base frame is collected from accredited and sustainably managed forests.
- All of the steel used in the frame is made from at least 80% recycled metal.
- Beneath the natural latex top is a soy base foam, made from soy beans (another renewable resource), which adds cushioning and additional comfort to the mattress.
I worked with the Simmons team on designing the educational foot streamers. Here, you can learn all about the scientific and consumer benefits of our mattress line: a limited 20-year warranty and no-flip technology meaning you never, ever have to flip this mattress.
And a fun bolster pillow at the top of the bed. I always wondered why the pillows on mattresses in stores always looked so floppy and unattractive. I thought this would be an aesthetically-pleasing version instead; the leaf pattern on the left and right is inspired by the rubber tree... our source for the natural latex!
I filmed a video explaining the eco and consumer benefits of our mattress line. It'll be posted soon and I'll share it with you.
Anyway, I'm really excited for the launch of this healthy, eco mattress line. I really think it's one of the best green mattresses out there---natural materials and Simmons support and technology---for a marriage of style and sustainability.
Let me know if any of you happen to stop by your local JCPenney store to test drive it out. Would love to hear what you think!
PS-It'll be on JCP.COM in about a week! And the retail price is around $1599 for a queen size set in your choice of firm, plush or pillow top!
UPDATE: The website for the mattress is now live at www.naturalcarebed.com. Check out the video I created all about the eco benefits of the Simmons Natural Care by Danny Seo mattress.
Also, some answers to a few questions:
1. The mattress is not treated with the fire retardant PBDE. In fact, all Simmons mattresses are free of the harmful chemical substance. We use a non-toxic salt-based solution to treat our mattresses.
2. The natural latex will not affect those with latex allergies. Our Talalay latex goes through a thorough, triple-washing to remove all the natural proteins. Also, when someone lays down on the mattress, they will never be in direct contact with the natural latex, too!

I almost bought a natural sofa from another retailer until I found out that soy-based foam meant only 10 percent natural. That sounds like greenwashing to me. I'm curious to know if this mattress is all natural. If so, I'm buying it! And please also make a sleeper sofa that doesn't offgass!

Danny,
This is EXACTLY what I've been waiting for—an affordable, eco-friendly mattress. I can hardly wait.

A green mattress and you don't have to flip it? My friend told me about this but I didn't believe her. Sweet!

this is great news! i'm SO excited as we've been wanting a new mattress but didn't know what to get - we can really feel good about buying this one. we live near a lake and have mold/mildew issues so this is perfect!! does it come in children's sizes?

I am so excited for this mattress... i have been searching for almost 4 months for a mattress that would combine what i thought did not exist.
-The feel of a latex mattress but not the fumes that come from it breaking down. The rubber tree aspect is inspired
-The pillowtop plushness that every girl wants...i like the pattern too.
-The single girls dream: a mattress i do not have to turn.
Thanks Danny for partnering with Simmons on this...it does not hurt that they are a brand we can trust.
Cheers to good healthy sleep.
I will report back after my purchase.

I am one of the lucky ones who got a Natural Care mattress before it came out in stores. Actually I received it on EARTH DAY! What a coincidence. Anyway, it was for my daughter who is switching to a big girl bed, and for a girl who hasn't slept all night long by herself in months, I was amazed that on the first night, I didn't hear a peep from her! I am a believer. It is beautiful and comfortable and eco friendly. I'm getting one for myself!

I'm very excited to hear about this mattress. As an allergy sufferer, it's nice to know that dust mites & mold, will not like to nest here.
And since my birthday is June 1st... I'm putting this on my birthday list. Surprisingly a coil in my old mattress sort of popped out the side this weekend... and I told my hubby I'm on the market for a new one.
Keep up the great work. We and Planet Earth thanks you.
Oh... I even bought recyclable grocery bags at Trader Joe's. They are so colorful... you just want to use them. I take them

This is an amazing idea! I love it. Can't wait to get rid of my old mattress and get this one instead.

I need a new mattress sometime soon. This one sounds pretty good. Thanks for all the info. I love the design on it and the bolster pillow is awesome. I have always thought that mattresses need something like that.

Does your mattress have the required fire retardants that other mattresses have?
Posted by:aek | May 06, 2008 at 08:44 PM
This sounds great. I cant wait for our mattress to "run out" to get one.

I am excited about this new mattress. Thanks for updating the
informations on this product.
Keep up the good jobs.

Does the mattress need to be sprayed with BDE (a nasty chemical) to meet flame retardency requirements ? BDE has been found to collect in the breast tissue of women.
Posted by:Al | May 07, 2008 at 05:33 PM
I called Simmons and they told me the mattress is free of that harmful fire spray PBDE...

How will this mattress affect people with latex allergies?

Hi Danny,
I've got to put my two cents here. I am not rich, I am barely middle class. I don't make a lot of money and I am careful about spending money. I try to buy healthy foods, and items that are not only affordable but long lasting. Yes I would love organic, but the fact is, the price of organic/green is out of my budget. I don't want to go into debt to be green, that makes no sense. The mattress looks wonderful, but to a person like me it is totally unaffordable.
I find that when people now talk "organic" the price increases dramatically. If the green movement is to become a standard of living for all economic levels of living the cost for "organic" items, daily necessities, not to mention quality items that last a long time has to decrease dramatically. I know that if enough people start buying said items the marketplace will either produce more and various stores will have sales that make the average buyer be able to buy such items. But for me and I would bet a whole lot of other consumers, price, availability, need are going to win out and that is where "organic/green" loses out.
PS I am not envious or bitching that I can't afford said item, so no one can have said item. I would just like the whole organic/green thing to become a lot less elitist and more encompassing.

I second Patty. What is the point of partnering with a company like Simmons if it doesn't make it available to the masses? If I want to pay that much for a natural mattress, I'll support smaller vendors! Sorry, Danny, this one is a real miss.

I just went to JCPenney and had a chance to lay down on this mattress. It's so great, Danny! I'm really happy for you.
I think partnering with Simmons was a great choice because it comes with a 20-year warranty. When I returned a Simmons mattress a few years ago, it was no questions asked. Customer service is so key to a good mattress... and that's my two cents! Good job!

I have been shopping for a new mattress for months now because my current one is over ten years old and has got to go because of my muscle aches and neck and back issues. My current mattress is just screaming to be donated to goodwill!! I almost immediately stumbled onto information about this new natural care line by Danny since I am specifically searching for something eco friendly, along the latex line, etc. But, I cannot find this thing anywhere!?!?!? I have a local JCPenney near me and a ton of elder-beermans who seem to carry one specific natural care mattress but not the 'Danny Seo' one. No one I have talked to at the JCPenney store near me seems to have a clue about this line or even care they have a customer seriously wanting one!! HELP! I have sent emails and left messages galore with Simmons, elder Beerman, Penney's etc. but no luck and no response. Is there another mattress company who offers a similar or better product, like RoyalPedic perhaps that I could pursue since I seem to be getting the runaround with the Simmon's line?

I cannot find a store near me that has this mattress, and I searched JCP online and it is not listed????????

Danny-Thank you for bringing a responsible, beautiful and useful item to the market. I am supplying a client's new home in Malibu with new mattresses (total of 5 main bedrooms and 2 guest house bedrooms). I needed an affordable alternative for all the rooms other than her main bedroom (where she naturally had a much higher budget). I WILL BE ORDERING THESE THIS WEEK. Fantastic--you've made my day!
Congrats on the launch! Kathy

Danny-
I am very frustrated trying to find this bed at JC Penney's. They only say they have one called NEW HOPE that is not mentioned on your natural care website. They do not even have that one listed on their website and I don't know what NEW HOPE is compared to the others. Where can I go and feel them- if I can't find them anywhere. What a disservice to your customers. HELP!
