I've posted about this project before, but I still think it's a goodie.
I just completed making a storybook birdhouse out of an old children's fairy tale book, some decoupage glue, and an unfinished birdhouse. I'm going to be a guest on a new HGTV show called She's Crafty, so I thought I'd make a few.
It's so easy to make: just cover the birdhouse with pages from the book, using the decoupage glue to adhere the pages to teh birdhouse. Let dry and then cover the whole thing again with a coating of the same glue. It'll look like a white, globby mess all over the birdhouse, but once it dries, it's completely clear and seals the whole house. Attach the book jacket on top (use glue and then add a few nails) and voila! Birdhouse.
People have asked me if these can be used outside, and frankly, I think not. But you could probably varnish the hell out of it to make it waterproof. Instead, I think it looks great in a kid's room or just lined up in the living room.

I love the birdhouse !! Great idea for an old children's book. Please keep the ideas coming !!

i suggest marine varnish (like they use on boats) both inside & out if you can coat it before putting the roof on.
another suggestion is resin. but its not so fun to work with and with enough coats of marine varnish it will be waterproof.

If you use marine varnish, or resin, or something else, will it be harmful to a bird who comes to live in the house?

I finally got the nerve to show you the house I constructed from your tutorial on Storybook House.
