Rocky Checkers
What a great idea. For a nature-inspired game of checkers, why not gather up some black and white pebbles and use them instead?
When the front porch of my house is finally out of renovation hell, I think I'll paint a checkered pattern on top of an old wooden tray. Then I'll ask my friends to search for black and white rocks from the yard or the river down below and will have a game of checkers ready to go!

that is a very cool idea- I am worried though - what happens when you get your piece to the back and get a crown? this is how we play - it's called 'draughts' no idea why - and the crown can move in any direction - is this how it works with checkers? if so - what to do?

You could paint a little crown on the underside of the rocks, and when you get "crowned" you can flip the rock over.

Another idea is using a soda bottle crown for a playing piece which is also common in many rural areas in most third-world countries.
